New publisher joins Publications Router – Hindawi

As part of Open Access Week, we have a series of posts and announcements which highlight our ongoing work in supporting open access. Today Steve Byford writes about the latest development for Publications Router.

Hindawi joins Router

Open access publisher Hindawi Ltd is now distributing its journal articles into institutional repositories via Jisc’s Publications Router service, helping institutions to showcase their open access research articles.

Hindawi publishes over 280 journals under its own brand, and nine titles under the Wiley Hindawi co-brand. The journals cover a wide range of disciplines across science, technology and medicine and areas of social science.

Automated delivery of full-text articles

Publications Router delivers not only rich and accurate metadata describing the articles, but also the full text of the articles themselves, in their published version of record. This means that, as well as being able to track their research outputs, institutions avoid the need to track down and upload the full text articles – they arrive automatically and seamlessly straight into their systems.

Subject to their review procedures, it is then a simple step for institutions to expose the articles publicly on their repositories.

The metadata also includes links to the user licence for each article, so that repository users can easily see how they may use the content – without the institution or the author needing to add these details manually.

The Router analyses the incoming metadata from Hindawi to match the articles to the appropriate participating institutions, based on the affiliations of the co-authors.

Efficient showcasing of research helps demonstrate policy compliance

Hindawi’s content is published under the Gold open access model. They supply the articles daily, upon publication. Most of these will be with the institutions within two months of acceptance for publication. This not only helps institutions keep track of their compliance with the policy on open access and the REF, for example, but also demonstrates publicly that they are doing so.

Further publishers to follow – including subscription publishers

Hindawi is the latest publisher to be added to the list of content providers to the Router.

Jisc is in advanced discussion with a wide range of further publishers, many of whom are indicating openness to providing accepted manuscripts of articles published under the subscription model. Where relevant, the metadata will also include the embargo end date. Several have already supplied test files.
